What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of Asian medicine based upon the flow if vital force, or qi, through an interconnected network of vessels, or meridians, throughout the human body. Health depends upon a correct and balanced flow of qi. Acupuncture seeks to restore this balance through insertion of ultra-fine needles into acupuncture points located along the meridians. Acupuncture needles are ultra-thin, pre-sterilized and disposable. They are designed for one time use only. Since they are designed to part the skin, not to tear it, insertion of the needles is usually painless. During treatment, patients often enter a state of deep relaxation, and may experience sensations of numbness, tingling or heaviness around the needles. An acupuncture treatment may also involve the use of additional techniques that do not involve the insertion of needles. These techniques are designed to stimulate the flow of qi and blood superficially within the skin and muscles of the body, and are used to treat a variety of conditions such as muscle stiffness and rash.
What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Herbal medicine is the prime treatment method within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Chinese herbal medicine is a holistic medicine, and is based upon not only a disease diagnosis but also on an individualized pattern diagnosis. The patient receives a customized herbal prescription designed specifically for their physical condition and their particular ailment. Most Chinese herbs are derived from vegetable sources, but occasionally herbs from animal and mineral sources are utilized. Therefore, you should discuss with your practitioner any unique requirements or restrictions you may have regarding your prescription. For example, you should let your practitioner know if you are a vegetarian.
